Magruder High School

Season Outlook: The Colonels were a surprisingly strong team last year despite having a new coach and starting six sophomores. Although Magruder lost in the first round of the regional playoffs to Springbrook, it has 10 players returning and will likely contend for division and region titles this spring.

Junior Brooke Hughes assumes complete control of the Colonels' pitching duties after sharing time with All-Gazette performer Allison Stang last season. Hughes pitched in 13 games last year, compiling a 1.71 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 30 innings and her arm will likely determine how far Magruder goes into the postseason.

Senior third baseman/catcher Lisa Conner returns after hitting .333 last season, while sophomore shortstop/second baseman returns after batting .451 with 9 RBI and 21 stolen bases. Junior second baseman Candie Derry returns after hitting .386 last spring, junior center fielder Jessica White returns after batting .375 with 10 stolen bases, and junior catcher Laura Hendrickson returns after hitting .283 last season. Senior Janet Cushing hit .364 as the team's designated hitter last year and will likely start at first base this year, while junior utility player Heather Orem returns after hitting .302 last spring.

Sophomore third baseman Catherine Ebert and Junior pitcher Shannon Denham both join the team from the JV squad and each gives the Colonels depth at their respective positions.

"We only  have two seniors, but we have some very experience juniors", Magruder coach Kathleen Mulholland said. "I expect us to be a good hitting team and to step up against the teams we fell short against last year."
